Kay de Wolf shows potential at 2022 MXGP opener | Nestaan MX

Excited to show off their new colours, the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing duo raced into action at round one of the 2022 FIM Motocross World Championship this past weekend. Roan van de Moosdijk and Kay de Wolf started the twenty-round campaign in front of many passionate fans at the Grand Prix of Great Britain.

The first day of on-track action, Saturday, confirmed the progress that was made during the winter months. De Wolf and Moosdijk were first and second in free practice, which signalled their intent, and later jumped into the battle for the lead in the qualifying heat. De Wolf was second on lap one and right behind the early leader before an untimely crash dropped him back down to fifth, which is where he finished. Moosdijk was one spot further ahead in fourth in the first qualifying heat of the year.

Kay de Wolf was simply brilliant in the first moto on Sunday, as he worked his way from fourth to third and hounded the race leaders. The way that he used every inch of the Matterley Basin facility to find an opening had fans on the edge of their seats. Although he gave it his very best, he was ultimately forced to settle for third and turn his attention to moto two. A mediocre start in that second stint hindered him, unfortunately, as he could only advance to fifth after starting down on the cusp of the top ten. A 3-5 scorecard put him in fourth overall.

Making his Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing debut on the world stage, Roan van de Moosdijk showed a lot of potential at the Grand Prix of Great Britain. Moosdijk lost positions early in the first moto after running wide in turn two, but recovered well to reach sixth at the chequered flag. The second moto was the most encouraging – he moved into fourth on lap five and matched the pace of the top three for much of the race. A fourth in that second moto put him fifth in the overall classification, when paired with his sixth from moto one.

Following an encouraging opening round, the Nestaan Husqvarna Factory Racing duo are hungry for more and eager to tackle the second round of the 2022 FIM Motocross World Championship. The Grand Prix of Lombardia, run at the sandy venue of Mantova, will be held this weekend.

Kay de Wolf: "The weekend was not too bad! I really enjoyed the first moto and was flowing well. I finished third. I had a really bad start in the second moto though, so had to work my way back up into fifth. We will get back to work and go again at Mantova."

Roan van de Moosdijk: "It was a consistent weekend! I started the weekend quite well. I had a good start in the first moto, but got pushed wide in the second corner and had to fight back to sixth. I had a better start in the second moto and the first half was really good. We will come back a lot stronger next weekend."
